Returning to Chernihiv brought a powerful reminder of the strength found in young people facing extraordinary challenges. At the Chernihiv Regional Youth Centre, alongside Lord Risby, we met with remarkable young people who are shaping their future despite the ongoing war and daily uncertainty. Their determination and hope stood out clearly, revealing a generation defined not by conflict but by resilience and unity.

Meeting the Youth of Chernihiv
The Chernihiv Regional Youth Centre serves as a vital hub for young people in the region. It offers a safe space where they can gather, learn, and support each other. Despite the damage caused by bombings and the disruption of everyday life, the centre remains a symbol of hope and community spirit.
During our visit, we spoke openly about the challenges Ukraine continues to face. The young people shared their experiences of living through war, the impact on their education, and the uncertainty about the future. Yet, what impressed us most was their refusal to be defined by these hardships. Instead, they focus on rebuilding their lives and contributing to their country’s recovery.
The Role of Youth Workers
Behind these determined young individuals are dedicated youth workers who provide essential support. These professionals help create programs that encourage personal growth, leadership, and community involvement. Their work is crucial in maintaining the centre’s activities and ensuring the youth have access to resources and guidance.

The youth workers also play a key role in fostering international connections. They understand the importance of building bridges between young people in Chernihiv and those in other regions, such as Kent in the UK. These partnerships offer opportunities for cultural exchange, learning, and mutual support.
Building International Partnerships
One of the most promising aspects of our visit was discussing how to strengthen ties between young people in Chernihiv and Kent. These connections can provide valuable experiences and broaden horizons for both communities. Plans include joint projects, virtual exchanges, and collaborative events that promote understanding and friendship.
Such partnerships also bring practical benefits. For example, sharing knowledge about youth engagement strategies can help improve programs in Chernihiv. At the same time, young people in Kent gain insight into the resilience and creativity of their Ukrainian peers.

Reconstructing the Youth Centre
The Chernihiv Regional Youth Centre suffered significant damage during the conflict. Rebuilding it is a priority for the community and a symbol of recovery. Restoring the centre will allow it to continue serving as a safe space where young people can meet, learn, and grow.
Reconstruction efforts will focus not only on repairing the physical building but also on enhancing its facilities to better support youth activities. This includes creating spaces for workshops, cultural events, and educational programs. The goal is to provide an environment that inspires creativity and leadership.
The Spirit of a Generation
Reflecting on the visit, Kent With Ukraine Founder Jordan Meade said: 'What makes this generation of young Ukrainians remarkable is their outlook. They are united by a shared vision of their country’s future as part of Europe. Their confidence in this future drives them to overcome obstacles and work toward positive change and we are fully with them in wanting to create a strong Ukraine for the future'
This spirit is evident in their community involvement, their eagerness to learn, and their willingness to support each other. They are not passive victims of conflict but active participants in shaping their destiny.

Looking Ahead: Projects and Support
Following the visit, severalKent With Ukraine projects are underway to support Chernihiv’s youth. These initiatives aim to provide educational opportunities, promote cultural exchange, and assist in rebuilding efforts.

Supporting young people in the Chernihiv region means investing in the future of Ukraine. Their resilience and determination offer hope that, despite current hardships, a brighter future is within reach.
