Higham Marks the Anniversary by Honouring Ukraine’s Defenders and Supporting Novyi Bilous

Updated: Feb 27

This morning at 8am, the community of Higham gathered with a clear purpose: not only to remember the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but to reaffirm their steadfast support for the Ukrainian people. Four years have passed since Russia launched an illegal full-scale invasion of sovereign Ukraine. As the war enters its fifth year, the brutal reality remains: deliberate terror, horrific war crimes, and a regime indifferent to human life continue to define this conflict.

Before raising the Ukrainian flag in the village, local residents and borough and parish Councillors observed two minutes of silence. This moment of quiet was a powerful tribute to those who have sacrificed so much.

Remembering the Fallen and the Brave

The silence honored many groups:

  • Heroes who have fallen defending their homeland and, by extension, the security of Europe.

  • Men and women still fighting on the front lines, risking their lives daily.

  • Veterans who carry life-changing injuries from the conflict.

  • Medics, rescue workers, volunteers, and humanitarian workers who face danger to save others.

  • Families who endure hardship, sleeping in basements, burying loved ones, and refusing to surrender their nation.

This collective pause was a solemn reminder of the human cost of war and the resilience of those affected.

Prayers for Chernihiv and Novyi Bilous

Following the silence, the Reverend Canon Clive Jones, Parish Priest at St John's Church, Higham, led the community in prayers. Special attention was given to the people of the Chernihiv region, a place deeply affected by the conflict. The prayers also focused on Higham’s twin village, Novyi Bilous, strengthening the bond between the two communities.

This spiritual moment underscored the shared hope for peace and safety amid ongoing challenges.

Higham’s Commitment to Support Ukraine

Four years into this brutal war, fatigue could easily set in. Yet, the people of Higham show no signs of wavering. Their support for Ukraine is not limited to words but is demonstrated through actions. Today’s gathering made clear that the community is ready to do more.

This commitment reflects a broader understanding: defending Ukraine means defending freedom and security for all of Europe. The people of Higham recognise this responsibility and stand united in their support.

What This Means for the Future

The anniversary event in Higham is a call to action for everyone who values freedom and human dignity. It reminds us that:

  • Support for Ukraine must continue and grow.

  • Communities can play a vital role in providing moral and practical support.

  • Solidarity with those affected by war strengthens international bonds.

Higham’s example shows how local communities can make a difference by honoring those who defend freedom and by standing with their friends abroad.

Slava Ukraini! Heroiam Slava! The people of Higham send a clear message: they will not forget, and they will continue to stand with Ukraine.
